    Literature Review:

Mary Shelley's Frankenstein; or the Modern Prometheus is the perfect book to read if you have ever been an outcast that wanted to fight back or if you just like to root for the underdog. Of course, its great for everyone else as well! Many people reading this have probably at least seen the old black and white Frankenstein monster movies, but what was lost in many of the movies is the underlying dedication and love of the creature for his maker. The creature's perspective is not truly focused in earlier movies. They portray him as a mindless, bumbling idiot who cannot do anything but harm others. In the book its almost quite the opposite. He is a sympathetic creature who is pitied & bullied by his creator. Perhaps, the best movie that comes the closest to the book would be Mary Shelley's Frankenstein directed & acted by Kenneth Branagh.

In 1816 Shelley experience her own personal tragedy which inspired her Frankenstein novel. She lost a child and this gave her nightmares sparking the first thoughts about this Gothic novel. Shelley traveled to numerous places in Europe while gathering her book together.

The name Frankenstein never actually referred to the monster as it does in the old monster movies. Victor Frankenstein was the scientists that created the creature depicted in the novel. The creature was always referred to as "it", "the creature", "monster", "demon", "wretch" & "abortion".

Frankenstein is a great read for horror & sci-fi fans alike, but don't expect it to be anything like an old monster movie.
